A structured reflection tool for professionals navigating leadership inside corporates.

I recently celebrated my 50th birthday surrounded by trees, sunshine, water, fire, drumming beats, face art and 120 of my tribe people.

It was more than just a celebration. It reflected on the journey that brought me here – the mountains climbed, the lessons learned, the love and connections that carried me through.

There was the smiles of close family, old and new friends, colleagues, Kilimanjaro conquerors, business partners, coaches, spiritual healers – my beloved tribe.

Wearing my green, glittering dress and sneakers, I walked down a red carpet into a garden glowing with trees, sunlight, and joy. The drums thundered, confetti sparkled, and tears of gratitude filled my eyes as my 6 nieces and nephews welcomed me with a shower of sparkles.

We shared drumming, dancing, face painting, laughter, and heartfelt speeches. Guests joined in a drumming circle, creating a powerful rhythm, and even pulled me into the center to dance – a moment of pure exhilaration.

The Speeches

Brenda, my sister, shared our unbreakable bond and childhood stories – enough to bring a tear to my dad’s eye.

Codi, my daughter, spoke from her heart about growing up with a single mum who “gets things done,” and how that inspired her strength.

Fernando reflected on the impact I’ve made as a global leader.

Luke toasted me with the three C’s of success: Competence, Courage, and Character.

Lyn from Help2Read shared how the donations and books raised would help children discover the joy of reading.

When it was my turn to speak, I reflected on 5 decades of life and shared these lessons – hard-earned, heartfelt, and lived:

  • I can always start over. No setback is final. Every chapter – even painful ones – can lead to a new beginning if you’re willing to turn the page.
  • Pain has shaped me – but joy has saved me. Pain has been a teacher, but joy is a choice I’ve learned to embrace again and again.
  • I’ve let go of needing to be liked. People’s opinions no longer define me. I stand in my truth, even when it means standing alone.
  • I’ve finally found home in myself. No longer searching outside of myself for validation – I feel whole and safe within.
  • I’m here to make a difference – in my own way. Impact isn’t about scale; it’s about authenticity and showing up where I’m needed.
10 Symbols of a Day That Reflected Me

What made this day even more meaningful were the symbols that wove my story into the celebration – each reflecting a piece of who I am:

  1. The garden with trees, water, warm sun, and fireplaces – reflecting my connection to nature and its grounding, radiant energy.
  2. Guests: Kilimanjaro teammates, close family, old and new friends, colleagues, business partners, coaches, spiritual healers – representing the many chapters of my life, the peaks I’ve conquered, and the people who stood beside me.
  3. Sunday, the sabbath – and the day I was born – a sacred day for reflection and gratitude.
  4. Drumming circle – the heartbeat of Africa, a connection to my roots as a daughter of the African sun, and to ancestral rhythms of strength and joy.
  5. Green dress and sneakers – a balance of style and comfort, elegance and authenticity.
  6. 3-tier, 3-flavoured cake & harvest table – the sweetness, richness, and abundance of life, layered with love, generosity, and memories.
  7. Raising funds & collecting books for children through Help2Read – showing my love for reading, and my purpose to help children discover the power of books.
  8. Dance floor full of women – sisterhood, solidarity, and the joyful energy we spark in one another.
  9. Face painting – a reminder to embrace playfulness, imagination, and the freedom to express even our whimsical side.
  10. A plant grown by my dad, given as a take-home gift – a living symbol of care, growth, and the bonds we continue to nurture long after the party ends.
The Impact

Together we raised R40,000 and collected 300 books for children. The garden lights sparkled, the fireplaces glowed, and we danced late into the evening, surrounded by love, energy, and blessings.

A Final Reflection

This day reminded me of what truly matters: connection, contribution, and living fully – unapologetically and joyfully.
